Used Volkswagen in PEI: what to check before you buy

There can be a big difference between two Volkswagens with the same model name. Start with the exact year, trim and condition of the vehicle in front of you.

Confirm which vehicle you are comparing

Open the listing and note the VIN, stock number, year, model, trim, kilometres and asking price. Equipment can vary by year and trim, and a badge or photo may not prove a feature is installed. Ask about the specific vehicle if heated seats, driver assistance, towing equipment or a second tire set matters to you.

Compare several live listings with similar kilometres and equipment. A lower asking price can reflect different age, condition or features, so a quick price-only comparison can be misleading.

Review maintenance and condition

Ask for available service records and whether recommended maintenance for that model and year has been completed. Check tires, brakes, warning lights, visible corrosion and the condition of the interior. If an all-wheel-drive vehicle is on your list, ask about the maintenance history of its drivetrain and the tires fitted to it.

A vehicle history report can help you ask better questions about ownership, reported damage and recorded kilometres. It does not show every repair. An independent pre-purchase inspection can add a separate assessment of the actual vehicle.

Test it for your Island routine

Try the seating position, controls and visibility before driving. On a safe route similar to your commute, note how the vehicle accelerates, brakes, turns and rides over ordinary pavement. Bring the cargo or child seat you regularly use; a compact car and a larger SUV may suit very different routines.

If winter traction is a concern, compare the condition and type of tires as well as the drivetrain. AWD can help a vehicle get moving on slippery surfaces, but it does not replace appropriate tires or shorten stopping distance on ice.

  • Confirm the current asking price, applicable taxes, fees and any optional products.
  • Ask what inspection, reconditioning or warranty information is available for this VIN.
  • If financing, compare the rate, term, amount financed and total cost of borrowing.
  • Confirm availability and book a viewing before travelling to see it.
