Used-car financing rates in PEI: how to assess a quote

A rate advertised elsewhere is not your loan offer. The useful number is the rate in a written quote for your vehicle and circumstances, alongside the full amount you would repay.

Why there is no single used-car rate

A lender assesses an application and presents terms for a particular purchase. The amount financed, vehicle, term, applicant information and lender can all affect the quote. An online payment example or another shopper’s approval does not establish the rate you will receive. Ask which lender made the offer and whether the rate and payments are fixed for the term.

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada recommends comparing quotes from multiple lenders and looking at the full loan terms. A dealership may arrange financing with several lenders, and you can also ask your financial institution about its options. No rate or approval is guaranteed before lender review.

See what a rate difference does to the same loan

For illustration only, finance $20,000 over 60 months with equal monthly payments, a fixed annual interest rate compounded monthly and no taxes, fees or optional products added. At 8%, the calculated payment is about $406 a month and the total of payments is about $24,332. At 12%, it is about $445 a month and $26,693 in total. That is roughly $2,362 more over the term for the same principal and length.

This example is arithmetic, not a DrivePEI financing offer or a prediction of approval. A real quote may use a different payment schedule, include taxes or fees, and have different contract terms. Ask for the written total amount payable rather than relying on a rounded website estimate.

Compare the written terms, not just the rate

  • Confirm the vehicle selling price, taxes, fees, trade allowance and down payment before comparing loans.
  • Write down the amount financed, interest rate, payment frequency, loan length and total of all payments.
  • Ask what financing fees or optional products are included and what the deal looks like without optional add-ons.
  • Ask whether the rate can change, what happens if you pay early and which conditions appear in the agreement.
  • Keep the same vehicle price and amount financed when comparing two lenders; otherwise a lower rate may still produce a higher total cost.

Choose a payment that leaves room to own the car

A longer term may lower the regular payment but increase interest paid. The federal consumer agency warns that long terms can leave a borrower owing more than the vehicle is worth for longer. Add insurance, fuel, tires and a repair allowance to your monthly budget before choosing a vehicle on its payment alone.

If a quote strains the budget, compare a lower-priced car, a different down payment or another lender’s written terms. Use DrivePEI’s payment filter only to explore scenarios: it uses the rate and term you enter and the listed vehicle price before taxes and fees.

Apply and ask questions in the right place

Use the secure credit application on the finance page for financial details when it is available. The ordinary contact form is for questions and should not contain a SIN, banking details or income documents. If you already have two offers, use our guide to comparing written financing offers to line up their numbers before deciding.

Bring the exact vehicle link or price range when you ask for help. That gives the team a useful starting point, while leaving the decision about approval and actual loan terms to the lender.
