Questions to ask about a used-car listing before visiting

A useful first message can save you a trip and make the eventual test drive more productive. Ask about the exact car, then follow up on anything the listing cannot confirm.

Start with identity and availability

Copy the VIN or stock number from the listing and ask whether that specific vehicle is still available. Confirm the advertised year, trim, kilometres and asking price. Inventory moves quickly, and similar vehicles can have different equipment or condition.

If a must-have feature is not clearly listed, ask for a photo or a direct confirmation. A generic model description is not enough to verify equipment on one used vehicle.

Ask what is known about its history

  • Is a current vehicle history report available, and does it include a lien check?
  • Are maintenance records or recent repair invoices available?
  • When was the vehicle last inspected, and can I review the inspection information?
  • Are there any known issues or upcoming maintenance items I should budget for?
  • Which tires, keys and accessories come with this vehicle?

Plan the visit around your needs

Ask whether you can drive a route that reflects your normal use and whether an independent pre-purchase inspection can be arranged. If you need room for a child seat, sports gear or mobility equipment, mention it before the appointment so you can check the fit.

For a trade-in, bring its year, make, model, kilometres and any loan payout information. Ask for the trade allowance and the purchase price as separate written figures so you can compare the whole transaction.

A message you can adapt

“I am interested in the vehicle with VIN [VIN]. Is it available to view? Could you confirm the price, kilometres and included tires, and tell me what history and inspection information is available? I would like to book a test drive and ask about an independent inspection.” Replace the bracketed VIN with the one on the listing and add your own priorities.

Avoid putting a social insurance number, banking details or full credit history in a general inquiry. Use a dedicated secure application if you choose to apply for financing.
